Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

Sorry this has taken so long to type up, but had a hectic day yesterday, had a friends 40h bbq, then race then a wedding in the night.....

Okay, I got there in plenty of time, bit tired after a long day, it was warm and humidity was high......  I didnt know anyone there which is unusual for me, so didnt know who to run with? the race started on a track, 400ms,then out through a small funnel, it was a very fast start very fast in deed and I went along with it, not realising how fast I was running till I hit the road 5 min pace, just before 1 mile I realised I was steaming along with another women and thought I need to slow the pace allot, I think I slowed too much about 6 min pace, I was actually struggling, 1st mile was 5.35 mins way too fast I was aiming for 5.45 and really it was last quarter I probably lost the 35 secs, so really I was running at 5 min pace for much too long.

I died from here on which was a horrible feeling, I felt heavy my shoulders dropped legs heavy arms hurting on 1 mile is not good, I just tried to hang on in and on mile 2 you have to do a small uturn on a small pathway, which was awfull with lots of people going either way, and You virtually stop to turn round, well of course I was real tired and it took me ages to get going again.

mile 2 6.15min oh dear and the last one was awful it was marathon pace 6.45 mins, and I felt proper sick at the end, I was not impressed, the lady I ran with at the start did an awesome 15.38 mins ouch no wonder I died.

My slowest and crumiest 5k ever yes ever 18mins 58 secs, that is bad! and I am not impressed at all as it was all my own fault for going out so fast!

5k race Lancaster uk  not a very impressive course afraid I wont be doing this one again!

Good luck! I can not wait to read your race report.

From ChrisM on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 10:37:07 from 86.139.250.95

Whoops-just please don't run the first mile of the marathon at that pace! LOL!

I guess on the plus side it was a good workout. I suppose next time you do a 5k you will at least know how fast you *can't* run it...

From Burt on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 11:42:41 from 98.167.151.26

Some day I'll be mad at myself if I run 2 seconds under 19. LOL!

From allie on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 15:22:00 from 208.110.151.113

don't get down on yourself for this. i think you ran a great race! 4th place and sub-19 is great. a solid performance. as chrisM said, if anything it was a great workout :) one step closer to a PR in your upcoming marathon.

thanks everyone, Yeah I am hard on myself I know, but your never going to achieve your best if you dont be a bit harsh :)

thanks allie yes I am concentrating mostly on that marathon ta :)

15:38 that is some stiff competition and some spread. Sorry about the off day. Good to get them out of your system with the 5K races. Much better to crash there than to crash in a marathon. I hope this week goes better and the experience fuels you for the next go around.

From sam Dean-Howard on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 07:19:01 from 78.32.130.9

Adam, thanks, I have never raced a 5k with the lady winning in a time like that.

My garmin indicates I was allot faster 1st 800ms was 2mins 27 secs, indicating a pace of 4.49 mins per mile, then I had eased but not much, 0.5 miles in 2mins 40 indicating still 5mins 20 pace, much too fast, I said in the blog, I blew up just after 1 mile, but still stuck out 6 min pace, then completly died on the last 1.2 miles so yeah it was a crash LOL

Now Ive looked at the garmin properly I am ok about it, yeah it is fuelling me now thanks Adam :)

From ChrisM on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 08:00:51 from 86.139.254.226

My 800m PB is 2:27!

Who was the winning lady? Must be someone fairly well known if it was a 15.xx?

From sam Dean-Howard on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 12:01:57 from 90.195.99.108

Chris, Rebecca Robinson, is her name and its a huge pb for her even, 16.23 was her previous time, and shes done a 33 min 10k recently ouch!

My pb for 800ms when I was 14 I think was 2.16mins, so me training for a marathon and not doing track work its not bad eh! during a 3.2mile race LOL....

I am much happier now I have evaluated my race with the garmin, thank god for the garmin :)

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 15:01:09 from 64.81.245.109

At least you could hang with a 15:38 lady for three quarters. That is a plus. Slowing down that much afterwards is a minus, but it shows what you need to work on. Aerobic fitness. Do what you can to run the mileage consistently without injuries.

From Kory on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 16:57:14 from 134.50.89.33

That's okay we learn from each race. Harnessing that adrenaline is a big key in the being of the race. Patience I think is the hardest thing to learn in a short race.

But look at it this way you can chalk it up as speedwork. It also seems you went into the race tired, and that could have been a key factor.

From Kory on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 17:00:18 from 134.50.89.33

You wrote this "I felt heavy my shoulders dropped legs heavy arms hurting on 1 mile is not good"

I'm wondering if you over-trained and plus going into the event tired. Also the heat is never forgiving.

From sam Dean-Howard on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 05:53:00 from 78.32.130.9

Kory Thanks for you comments, they are exactly what my coach has just spent 50 mins on the phone telling me, the exact same thing harnessing my adrenaline and enthusiasm until the the last few 100ms of course.

Well I got close to an old pb for 800ms too so not all bad!

I have leant, it was a huge lesson in lactic acid :)

Over trained for a 5k yes, but not a marathon and I had done extra mileage, Coach did ask me to do, but was made up I did it with no injury, and yes that 90mile week I think was still n my legs.

Sasha thankyou for your comments, and when i go back to training for 5ks I will work on that more, but it was more a test for my fitness for the marathon, and I am thinking of hitting the track for a 3000m race this weekend for my club! who I havent run on the track for since 2007 just before the great north run when I was pregnant (unknown to me).

I am on an up after my long talk with coach and on here your all very supportive thanks :)
